📐 How to Use

  1. Set the From dropdown to the unit you have and the To dropdown to the unit you need.
  2. Type the force into the input under From. The converted value appears at once in the To input and in the live result box.
  3. Use the swap arrows to flip the pair in place, and the Copy button to lift the result for pasting elsewhere.
  4. Pick a tile from the Common Force Conversions grid for frequent pairs such as newtons to pound-force, or open any entry in All Force Conversions to reach its own page and full conversion table.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

QHow many newtons are in 1 pound-force?
1 pound-force is 4.44822 newtons, and 1 newton is 0.22480902 pound-force. The pound-force is the weight of one pound of mass under standard gravity, which is why the ratio matches the kilogram-to-pound mass ratio multiplied by 9.80665.
QHow many newtons in a kilogram-force?
1 kilogram-force is 9.80665 newtons exactly, since a kilogram-force is defined as the weight of one kilogram under standard gravity. Reading the other way, 1 newton is 0.10197162 kilogram-force, so a 10 N pull is roughly one kilogram hanging on a string.
QIs kilogram-force the same as kilogram?
No. The kilogram measures mass and the kilogram-force measures the force that mass exerts under standard gravity. The numbers coincide on Earth, which is why load ratings in kgf look like masses, but on the Moon a one-kilogram mass presses with about 0.17 kgf.
QHow many dynes make a newton?
1 newton is exactly 100,000 dynes, because the dyne is the centimeter-gram-second unit: one gram accelerated at one centimeter per second squared. It survives in older physics papers and in surface tension figures given as dynes per centimeter.

ℹ️ About Force Conversion

Force is mass times acceleration, and the newton is its SI unit: one kilogram accelerated at one meter per second squared. The trouble starts with gravitational units. Kilogram-force and pound-force describe a force as the weight of a mass under standard gravity, 9.80665 meters per second squared, so they quietly build the Earth into the definition. Imperial practice adds another trap, the poundal, which accelerates one pound at one foot per second squared and is therefore about 32 times smaller than the pound-force.

Ten units appear here, from the meganewton down to the dyne, the CGS unit worth one hundred-thousandth of a newton. The newton is the base: your value is multiplied by its own newton factor, then divided by the target unit's. Output is rounded by size, between four and eight decimal places, and calculated by the page script.
