About This Tool
A canonical link element names the URL you would prefer search engines to treat as the address of a piece of content when several addresses serve it: with and without a trailing slash, with tracking parameters attached, or reachable through more than one category path. Google describes rel=canonical as a strong signal rather than a directive. It is weighed alongside internal links, redirects and the sitemap when a canonical is chosen, and it can be overruled.
This tool takes one URL and writes the matching link tag as you type, with no generate step in between. The output is shown as text and copied with one click. Nothing is validated and nothing is fetched: the URL you type is the URL that appears between the quotation marks.
Notes & Limits
- The URL is not validated or normalized. A relative path, a typo in the domain or a trailing space is written into the tag exactly as entered.
- One tag is produced at a time. For a site-wide rollout, take the pattern from here and have your template build the rest from each page's own address.
- A canonical that points at a page which 404s, redirects elsewhere or declares a different canonical of its own will be ignored, and the tool cannot see that.
- Canonicals and hreflang interact, since each language version should be canonical to itself. Use the Hreflang Generator for the alternate links, not this tool.
