📐 How to Use

  1. Select your starting scale in the From dropdown and enter the reading, including a minus sign for values below zero.
  2. Select the scale you want in the To dropdown; the converted reading updates live and the formula box shows the exact expression applied.
  3. Hit the swap button between the columns to reverse the two scales, for instance to go from Fahrenheit to Celsius instead.
  4. Press Copy to take the converted figure, use the Common Temperature Conversions cards for the six usual scale pairs, or open one from the All Temperature Conversions list to see a table of values.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

QWhat is 1 degree Celsius in Fahrenheit?
One degree Celsius is 33.8 degrees Fahrenheit. The formula is (C x 9/5) + 32: one times 1.8 is 1.8, and adding 32 gives 33.8. A Celsius reading can never be converted by multiplying alone, because the two scales start in different places.
QHow many Kelvin is 0 degrees Celsius?
Zero degrees Celsius is 273.15 K. Kelvin uses the same degree size as Celsius but counts up from absolute zero, so the conversion is addition: K = C + 273.15. Read the other way, 0 K is -273.15 degrees Celsius, the lowest temperature possible.
QWhat is 100 degrees Celsius in Fahrenheit?
100 degrees Celsius is 212 degrees Fahrenheit, the boiling point of water at sea level. Freezing is 0 and 32 on the same two scales. They cross at a single point, -40, where -40 Celsius and -40 Fahrenheit are the same temperature.
QWhat is the Rankine scale used for?
Rankine is an absolute scale with Fahrenheit-sized degrees, still seen in some US engineering work. Absolute zero is 0 degrees Rankine, which is -459.67 degrees Fahrenheit. One Kelvin equals 1.8 degrees Rankine, so Kelvin to Rankine is multiplication by 9/5 with no offset.

ℹ️ About Temperature Conversion

Temperature is not a count of something, so its scales carry offsets rather than a single multiplier. Celsius puts zero at the freezing point of water, Fahrenheit puts 32 there, and Kelvin starts at absolute zero, where 0 K is -273.15 degrees Celsius. Because the zero points differ there is no fixed ratio between scales: 1 degree Celsius is 33.8 degrees Fahrenheit, but 100 degrees Celsius is 212. Only Kelvin and Rankine share a zero, which is why converting between those two is a plain multiplication.

Four scales are supported: Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin and Rankine. Every conversion is computed through Celsius, which the tool derives from your input before shifting it into the target scale, and the formula it used is printed below the result. Numbers under 10 are rounded to six decimals and larger ones to four. Nothing is sent to a server.
