About This Tool
Meta tags are elements in a document's head that carry information about the page rather than content for display. Different consumers read different ones: the browser's parser uses meta charset to decide how to decode the bytes, mobile browsers use meta viewport to set the layout viewport, and crawlers read meta robots for indexing and link-following directives. The title element is not a meta tag at all, though it sits in the same block and does similar work.
This generator takes a title, a description, indexing and following choices, and optional author and keywords, then writes a block containing meta charset, meta viewport, the title element, meta name=title, meta description, meta robots and whichever optional tags you filled in. Angle brackets, quotes and ampersands in your text are escaped. The block is built in your browser; after you generate once, it refreshes as you edit any field.
Notes & Limits
- The tool writes tags; it does not check whether your page already has a title or robots tag, so remove the duplicates by hand after pasting.
- No Open Graph, Twitter Card or canonical tags are produced here. Use the Open Graph Generator and the Canonical Tag Generator for those.
- Input is capped at 120 characters for the title and 320 for the description, but no counter warns you when a title will be cut short in search results.
- Robots directives are limited to index/noindex and follow/nofollow. Values such as noarchive, nosnippet or max-snippet have to be added to the tag manually.
