About Length Conversion
Length measures the distance between two points, and the units people use for it come from two unconnected traditions. Metric units step by powers of ten, while imperial measure runs 12 inches to a foot, 3 feet to a yard and 1,760 yards to a mile. The two systems were only tied together in 1959, when the inch was fixed at exactly 25.4 millimeters. The traps are the units whose names look alike: a nautical mile is 1,852 meters, one minute of latitude, not the 1,609.344 meters of a statute mile.
Twelve units are covered here, from nanometers to light years. Each conversion runs through the meter: your value is multiplied by the source unit's size in meters, then divided by the target unit's. Displayed results carry eight decimal places below 1, six below 10 and four above that, with trailing zeros dropped. The arithmetic happens in your browser.
