How to Use
- Select the torque unit on your spec or tool in the From dropdown and the unit you want in the To dropdown.
- Key the torque figure into the value box; the result and its unit symbol appear immediately in the panel below.
- Use the swap control to turn an N·m to lbf·ft lookup into a lbf·ft to N·m one without retyping, then Copy the answer.
- Choose an entry in the Common Torque Conversions grid to load that pair, or open one of the All Torque Conversions links for a page with a stepped conversion table.

About Torque Conversion
Torque is a force applied at some distance from an axis, so its units are a force times a length: a newton-meter is one newton acting one meter out from the pivot. Two things make conversion awkward. The pound-force foot and the kilogram-force meter bury standard gravity inside the force half, since a pound-force is the weight of a pound. And a newton-meter shares its dimensions with the joule, yet torque and energy are different physical quantities, which is why fastener specifications are written in N·m and never in joules.
Ten units run from dyn·cm up to kN·m, all referred to the newton-meter: each is stored as its own value in N·m and the result is one factor divided by the other. Small results show up to eight decimal places, values of ten or more show four. Conversion runs in JavaScript on your device, with no server round trip.
