Frequently Asked Questions
QHow is WPM calculated?
Words per minute is calculated as the total characters typed divided by 5 (the standard word length), divided by the minutes elapsed. This is the "gross WPM" — net WPM subtracts errors.
QWhat is a good typing speed?
The average typist manages 40–60 WPM. Touch typists typically reach 70–90 WPM. Professional typists and power users often exceed 100 WPM.
QWhat does accuracy mean?
Accuracy is the percentage of characters typed correctly out of total characters typed. 95%+ is considered good; 98%+ is excellent.
QAre the passages the same every time?
No — passages are selected randomly from a built-in library so each test is a fresh challenge.
QIs my data saved?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser — no results are sent to any server.
About This Tool
WPM is calculated using the standard formula: (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. Errors are counted per character — typing a wrong character and then backspacing still counts as an error in gross WPM. Net WPM = Gross WPM − (errors ÷ minutes).
